La Monumental is the last bullring built in Barcelona and an architectural gem that forms part of the city’s historical and cultural landscape. Although bullfights are no longer held there, the building remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Eixample district and a tourist attraction for lovers of history and architecture.

📜 Brief History
Inaugurated in 1914 under the name Plaza de El Sport, it was expanded in 1916 and officially renamed La Monumental. Since then, it became the main bullfighting venue in Barcelona throughout the 20th century.
For decades, it hosted bullfights with international stars, as well as concerts, circus shows, and other popular events.
In 2010, the Parliament of Catalonia approved the ban on bullfighting (effective since 2012), which completely changed the use of the venue.
🏛️ Architecture and Style
The building is a blend of Neo-Mudéjar and Byzantine styles, with a stunning façade made of brick, glazed ceramic, and decorative details in blue and white tones.
- Architects: Manuel Joaquim Raspall and Domènech i Montaner
- Original capacity: over 19,500 spectators
- Key features: ceramic domes, Arab arches, and mosaics
The bullring has been well preserved and remains a fine example of early 20th-century architectural eclecticism.
🎭 Current Uses
Today, La Monumental is used for:
- 📚 Tourist visits to its Bullfighting Museum (with matador suits, vintage posters, photos, and curiosities).
- 🎶 Occasional concerts and shows (private events or festivals).
- 🏛️ Architectural photography: its façade and domes attract photographers and travelers.
There have also been proposals to convert it into a cultural venue or multipurpose center, although no official project is currently underway.
